Early Warning Scoring System (EWSS)
The Early Warning Scoring System (EWSS) is a tool that nurses and physicians can use to recognize deterioration in patients in the hospital. It identifies subtle changes in physiologic measurements that may precede clinical deterioration.
EWSs are based on the principle that clinical deterioration is often preceded by abnormalities in a variety of physiological measures, such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. The scores calculate a weighted aggregate score that prompts healthcare providers to intensify patient care and activate Rapid Response Teams or PARTs when necessary.
However, the manual process of EWS calculation has several drawbacks, such as a lack of efficiency because multiple patients are in a ward and some physiological variables take time to measure. Furthermore, it is difficult to ensure that staff is taking adequate physiological measurements, especially in busy wards.
